Greg Ward Posts Second Consecutive Victory
at White Lake, NC Course

Greg Ward
Winner of
2003 White Lake Open

3 May 2003 - White Lake, NC - John and Jill Womble, owners and operators at Goldston's beach in beautiful White Lake, welcomed 32 professionals and 12 amateurs from seven states, ranging from Pennsylvania down to Alabama, with full force as action got underway on Saturday at the White Lake Open. After a night of high winds that just completely wiped out the course, the course played in excellent conditions with a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day.

The last time the North Carolina tour played there, players witnessed lingering showers that prompted the start of the first event to a prime time start. On the second day, the 2002 Carolinas' Open was played with Greg Ward winning by four strokes over a trio of players. Ward made his valuable return to White Lake and won for the second straight time. Consistent shooting with rounds of 26, 26, and 25 was enough to give Ward a two-shot win over Robert Johnson and Greg Newport. Ward managed to win his first PPA event of the season on the North Carolina tour and his second overall this season, adding a win in Forest City on the South Carolina program.

Ward had been in the top five all afternoon, but never led until he made 17 in the final round. Andy Coradini led the way with an opening round 25 to lead by a shot over six different players, including Ward. Coradini still had at least a share of the lead at 51, but Newport's perfect nine on the front (the first time ever that has happened in White Lake history) vaulted him to a course record tying round of 22 to share the lead with Coradini, with Ward, Johnson, and Mike Brown a shot back at 52.

Coming down the stretch, Ward took over to fire a final round 25. He was trailing by one shot to Newport with two holes to play. With honors, Ward aced before Newport missed and on 18, Ward sank his in, then Newport hit the triangle and his ball was put behind the block to end up out of the tournament. Ward won with a final score of 77, with Newport and Johnson finishing tied at 79.

Ricky D. Schults used some final round heroics to win for the second time on the North Carolina tour this season. Schults trailed two-round leader Larry Hoover by two strokes and pulled one out when he fired a final round 24 to win the APA Division by four shots over Dennis Biesma.

Schults won with a final score of 81 for his second consecutive win, adding last Sunday's Palmetto Classic title to his streak of victories. Biesma finished in second at 85, while Donnie Carpenter came in third at 86.

Rounding out the top five in the Pro Division were Brown and Coradini, each at 80. Newport tied the course record of 22 in the second round, but Jeff Spainhour posted a 22 in the final round to salvage a bad outing for him as he finished at 83 and wound up tied for seventh. With his win, Greg Ward earned both his North Carolina State and Match Play spots.

The North Carolina tour will continue its weekend in White Lake for the Glass Bottom Open on Sunday, May 4, at 10:00 a.m.
