Andy Coradini Wins
2003 Barbara Nance Memorial

Andy Coradini
Winner of 2003 Barbara Nance Memorial

6 July 2003 - High Point, NC - Andy Coradini won a shootout at the Barbara Nance Memorial in High Point on Sunday that involved eight players separated by two strokes going into the final round. Coradini was in a tie for the lead with Greg Newport and Robert Johnson after starting out with rounds of 25 and 26 to go in at 51.

As an amateur, Bear Landin won three APA events on this course, including two last season and had won the previous two Wayne Hancock Memorials before the weekend began. Landin jumped out in front with an opening round 23 for a one-shot lead over Rick Carter. In the second round, the two leaders had mediocre rounds, but was still in the hunt. Coradini and Newport fired a 26 each, while Johnson shot 24 to take over a share of the lead at 51. Carter was in a tie for fourth and a shot off at 52, which was shared with Bob Haizlip and four players were in at 53, including Landin, Randy Carter, Randal Smith, and Saturday's winner Rick Rybaczek.

Coradini had it going in the last round. Despite higher scores from Saturday's play, Coradini fired a 26 in the final round to top the field for the first time on the North Carolina tour this season. Only four players out of the 30 participants in the Pro Division were in the 70's. Coradini won with a score of 77 to win the Barbara Nance Memorial. A native of Loganville, Georgia, he becomes the fifth different player from the state of Georgia to win this type of event.

Newport, who had won five events over the last two seasons here in High Point, will not come away with a win this season here as he finished a shot off the win at 78. Haizlip and Landin were tied for third at 79, while the Carters tied Rybaczek and Smith for the fifth position at 80. Greg Newport earned the North Carolina State medal play spot, and Bob Haizlip earned his spot into the North Carolina match play championship.

Ricky D. Schults won again and completed a sweep on the North Carolina tour for the second time this season. Schults jumped out to a three-shot lead going into the final round and posted a decisive five-shot win over the reigning State Champion, Russell Sigmon, Jr.

Schults completed the weekend with a winning score of 79 to record the tour's leading sixth win of the season. Sigmon, still waiting for his first win since the State last season, was second at 84, and third went to Keith Waters at 85.

The North Carolina tour resumes action in two weeks in Burlington. There will be a tournament on Saturday, July 19, a make-up date from a March 30 snow-out. The event will be the NCPutters.Com Open and it will be played on Course 2, with an approximate 4:00 p.m. tee time, or one full hour after the JPA National Championship is completed. There will be another event on Sunday, July 20 on Course 1 for the Howard Loy Memorial.
