Rick Rybaczek Fires Back to Back Rounds of 23 to Capture Wayne Hancock Memorial

Rick Rybaczek
Winner of
2003 Wayne Hancock Memorial

5 July 2003 - High Point, NC - Rick Rybaczek entered the Wayne Hancock Memorial in High Point on a high note. He had won the Furniture City Open played earlier this year on this course, and he was coming off with a win in his last tournament played in Wilson. Rybaczek was gunning for his tour leading third victory and he received it this past Saturday after closing out with stunning rounds of 23 and 23.

The round of 23 was a popular round for a few of the players. The score was good enough for opening round leader Michael Hitt. His first round 23 gave him a two-shot advantage over the field. Local player Jimmy Comer also shot 23 in the second round to put him out in front with a score of 49, and held a one-shot lead on Hitt and Rybaczek.

On an afternoon that featured sweltering conditions, scores were on its regular low pace throughout the day in High Point. In all, nine players out of 28 broke 80, which is right at average. Rybaczek used his 23's in the second and third rounds to pull out a two-shot win with a final score of 73. Rybaczek won his second consecutive state event for his third win of the season, and won his second consecutive event held in High Point.

Comer was second at 75, while Hitt was third at 77. Fourth went to Andy Coradini and Robert Johnson, tied at 78. Michael Hitt earned the North Carolina State medal play spot and, and Greg Newport earned the North Carolina Match play spot.

Ricky D. Schults came into High Point playing in the APA Division, where he was a four-time champion this season. His biggest challenge was Larry Hoover, who was a local player in his first season going his first win. Hoover was in command with opening rounds of 27 and 28 to lead by two shots over Schults. Schults came back with a final round 28 to catch Hoover and both were heading for a playoff with a score of 85 at the end of regulation. Schults would win the playoff by a count of 30-31 for his fifth win of the season in North Carolina.

The next tournament will be in High Point on Sunday, July 6, at 10:00 a.m. on Course 1 for the Barbara Nance Memorial.
