Robert Johnson Earns First Win of 2003 in Asheboro Classic

Robert Johnson
Winner of
2003 Asheboro Classic

16 March 2003 - Asheboro, NC - Two winners in the Pro Division were actually decided on Sunday as the weather was still uncooperative in Asheboro. On Saturday, play was halted in the third round due to persistent showers that may the Asheboro course unplayable and left a pending playoff over until the first round on Sunday. Andy Coradini and Randal Smith were tied for first at 53 after the second round, making the tournament official, and the two playing off for the win on Sunday. The first round of Sunday's tournament was used as the playoff round where Smith won the playoff 33-34.

However, Sunday's tournament went on as scheduled as was completed as scheduled. Robert Johnson led from scratch to post his first win of the season and fourth North Carolina event in his last seven outings as he cruised to a two-shot win over rookie local pro Bear Landin. Johnson jumped the gun with an opening round 28 for a share of the lead and then broke it wide open with a 26 for a commanding three-shot lead over Landin.

Rain finally subsided in the third round, but it did not do much better scoring wise. Although Rick Culverhouse posted the tournament's low score of 25 on Sunday, it was not enough to catch Johnson as he held on to win by two. A final round 29 for Johnson was enough to post a final score of 83, winning by two over Landin, who came on strong to finish at 85.

Donnie Carpenter recorded his first APA win since the 1999 season after returning from a hiatus. Carpenter posted a three-shot victory over the defending state champion Russell Sigmon, Jr. by posting rounds of 27, 31, and 29 to win with a score of 87. Carpenter's win enables him to grab the points lead early in the APA Division race. Ricky D. Schults came in third at 92.

Caudle finished in third in the Pro Division at 86, while Culverhouse's final round jumped him into a four-way tie with state champion Ray Guthrie and Gary Hester at 88. Johnson becomes the second player this season to grab a State Championship Qualifying spot and a State Match Play, where he will be the defending champion here in Asheboro later this season.

The North Carolina tour will continue its season on Saturday, March 29, at 12:00pm in High Point on Course 1, and on Sunday, March 30, at 10:00 a.m. in Burlington.
