23 August 2003 -
Southport, IN - Having
Charlie Greenwalt
in your bracket in the state finals would cause anyone fear. Such
was the case in the Indiana State Match Play Championships. With
three
players not showing up for the event, the pairings were redone and
play began. Greenwalt, who drew a first round bye almost didn't
make it to the second round of the winners bracket.
Jeff Garrison
took Greenwalt to the third hole of sudden death before losing.
The "Old Style" bucket hole, as it is referred to,
gave Garrison his first round victory over
Tom Gross in sudden
death. Greenwalt again went to Sudden Death this time defeating
Nate Nichols on the 2nd hole of "Overtime." Greenwalt won the
winners bracket in "Survivor" style as well defeating top seed
Tim
Greenert of Louisville on the second hole of Sudden Death.
Greenwalt would then wait for the winner of the losers bracket.
Jeff Garrison, who was not to thrilled about his "clank" off
the bucket hole to lose to Greenwalt, went on a mission to get
another crack at the two time state match play champion. Garrison
defeated
Danny Holcomb 1 up,
Shawn Gilliland 3 and 2,
John Ventura
1 up, Nate Nichols 2 up and Tim Greenert 2 up to get a second
crack at Greenwalt.
Garrison made the best of the second opportunity, realizing he had to
defeat Greenwalt twice to take home the State Match Play Title. he got
out to a leas in the 36 hole final and held on to defeat Greenwalt 3 and
2 and force a final 36 hole match. The second battle went to the final
hole where Greenwalt won 1 up to claim his third Indiana State Match
Play Title.
Zach Smith

23 August 2003 -
Southport, IN -
Zach Smith won 4
straight matches and breezed to the APA Indiana State Amateur
Match Play Championship. Smith defeated Andrew Smith 1 up,
Scott
McCutchen 6 and 5 to advance to the finals of the winners bracket
against John Watkins. Smith won the match 1 up and waited for the
winner of the losers bracket. John Watkins
defeated Bill Hammons 2 and 1 to get a second crack at Smith. Zach
and John went head to head for 36 holes and still couldn't decide
a winner. Smith aced a right rail shot on the first hole of sudden
death. Watkins just missed his ace giving Smith the Victory.
