Kevin Lacey Wins Inaugural Western Reserve Open Title in Playoff
Kevin Lacey, winner of the
2003 Western Reserve Open
Bonnie White, APA winner of the 2003 Western Reserve Open
6 September 2003 - Warren, OH - The Western Reserve Open provided the GLT players with a sneak peak at the GLT Championship, just two weeks away. Sunny skies and perfect playing conditions were the order of the day as the pros and amateurs tuned up their games as the end of the season draws near.
Uncharacteristic of a course that had previously produced winners who greatly distanced themselves from the pack, both the pro and APA divisions were both decided in playoffs. In the pros it was Kevin Lacey of Cincinnati defeating Todd Viau of Cedar Springs, MI and Tom OBrien of Cleveland after the trio had tied in regulation play with a score of 79, 29 under par. Viau had take the lead early in the event with a solid first round 23 that placed him a single stroke ahead of John Napoli of Sagamore Hills and Jim Cruse of Baltimore, OH. Viau could only manage 31 in round two, and that enabled Cruse to assume a four shot lead with a score of 49 over Brandon Yee of Columbus at 53, while Jay Hadsell of Olmsted Falls moved into third at 54. All three struggled in the final round and the leader board shuffled dramatically again. Lacey, Viau and OBrien seized the opportunity, as they fired rounds of 24, 25 and 24 respectively to deadlock at a final tally of 79. Lacey took command in the ensuing playoff and was able to lay up on the final two holes to cinch the victory. He received his second GLT spot for the victory.
Cruse continued to play well in the match play bracket, but was defeated by James Weber in the final match. Robin Ventura received the GLT spot in match play.
Bonnie White Wins Amateur Title in Playoff
In the APA division, two ladies were the only amateurs to shoot in the 20s for all three rounds, and that consistent play enabled them to separate from the pack with matching scores of 85. Reigning APA National Champion and APA World Champion Bonnie White of Concord Township continued her winning ways with a playoff victory over Barb Mingo of North Olmsted. White led after the first round at 27, and she and Mingo were tied at 56 entering the final round, where each finished with a 29. White took a big lead early in the playoff and never looked back. It was her second consecutive GLT APA title, coming off her Michigan Open victory two weeks ago in Ypsilanti. White made it a sweep in the APA match play by defeating Mingo again. Bill Combs received the only GLT spot awarded in the Western Reserve Open.
