Current PPA Pro Players Committee chairman
Bill Baus
of Cleveland Heights, OH has been a frequent contender on the GLT since
returning to competitive in the late 90’s after a long hiatus. Despite
having many good tournaments, Baus was winless on the GLT until today’s
Indiana Open on course 2. Baus scorched the course with rounds of
22-26-25 for a total of 73, 35 under par, and tied the lowest 54-hole
score shot on the GLT since its resumption of play in 1994.
Baus’ opening 22 gave him a two stroke lead over fellow Clevelanders
Roger
Beckerman and Jay Hadsell, as well as Jim Engel, of Austintown, OH
at 24. By repeating his 24, Beckerman was able to tie Baus after round 2
at 48. Bill Thompson of Olmsted Falls, OH was three back at 51 going
into the final round of play. Baus and Beckerman were paired together
for the event, and during the final round it became a two man race as
they both continued to make aces. Baus pulled away by three strokes in
the middle of the round, and with four holes remaining he looked like a
nearly sure winner. But an unanticipated dramatic finish lay ahead.
A lapse of concentration on a routine deuce putt led to a four at
number 15 for Baus, and with Beckerman’s follow-up ace, the two players
were suddenly tied. Beckerman missed at 16 to fall one back, but his
clutch ace at 17 brought the two players even with only number 18 to
play. Beckerman’s ace attempt failed to climb the hill, and for a moment
it looked very bleak for him. But he regained his composure and knocked
in his deuce from the tee mat to stay alive. Needing the ace, Baus
calmly stroked the ball up the hill and into the cup for the win and his
first GLT spot.

Anthony Amick, APA winner
of the
2003 Indiana Open
|
Beckerman settled for second place with a total of 74, and
James Weber
of Cincinnati finished third at 79. Fourth place finisher
Rod Miller
of Columbus earned the second GLT spot awarded in the event. There was
no match play competition in the Indiana Open.
Anthony Amick Posts Second APA
Victory
In the APA division,
Anthony Amick
bettered fellow Columbus, OH APA Andy McCoy by a single shot to win his
second APA title of the 2003 season with rounds of 28-28-25 for a total
of 81. First and second round leader,
Scott Copeland
of Springfield, OH struggled to only six under par the last round,
enabling both Amick and McCoy to sail past him from two back. Amick’s
final round charge led to a 25, tying the best APA round of the
tournament. McCoy earned a GLT spot, as did
Barb Mingo of
North Olmsted, OH with a playoff victory over
Bill Wahls
of North Ridgeville, OH.
