26 April 2003 - Monroeville, PA - Veteran pro Brad Lebo is used to traveling all over the country for PPA events, but the Shippensburg dentist decided to take advantage of the opportunity to play in his home state. After three rounds of solid play, Lebo added his first Great Lakes Tour title to an already lengthy list of PPA accomplishments.
A pleasantly cool windless day and slightly damp carpets set up perfect conditions for low scores on course 1. And the players responded.
Lebo trailed Pittsburgh's John Bambling and Greg Newport of Liberty, North Carolina by two after the first round of play, going into what would be the most dramatic round of the day. Lebo drilled fourteen aces to set a new course record score of 22, but literally seconds after he completed his round, Westlake, Ohio's Scott Buddie knocked in his final hole to shoot an unbelievable score of 20. Starting on hole 5, Buddie only missed only at holes 12 and 17, eclipsing the old record of 23 by three shots.
This set up a tie at 49 between Lebo and Buddie, with Penn Hills Ken Hastings only a shot back at 50. Lebo capped his fine day of putting with a solid 26 in round three for a total score of 75 to notch a two stroke victory over Hastings, who received the GLT qualifying spot. Lebo's 75 was seven shots better than the winning score from last year on the same golf course.
In the PPA match play, Kevin Lacey won five matches, including a victory in the finals over defending GLT champ, Dave Nutini. Nutini received the GLT spot.
Walter Kizzie Wins APA Title
In the APA division, it was Penn Hills Walter Kizzie who fired the low round of the day among the amateurs, a 26 in the second round, on his way to a score of 84, good enough for a two-stroke victory over Pittsburgh's Zach Washa. It was Kizzie's first GLT win, and he received a GLT spot for his efforts. Don Cherry won the APA match play and a GLT spot, defeating Washa in the finals.
The GLT thanks the Days Inn Monroeville for their sponsorship of our season opener, and the Monroeville Putters Club for their efforts in coordinating and hosting the event.
