Mike Brown Wins 2003 West Virginia Open by Two Strokes

Mike Brown, winner of the
2003 West Virginia Open

24 May 2003 - Charleston, W.V. - 1996 PPA National Champion Mike Brown of Springfield, PA captured the 2003 West Virginia Open with a score of 80, 28-under par. The victory gave Brown his second GLT title and earned him a berth in the 2003 GLT Championship to be held in September at Warren, OH.

Cool temperatures and partly cloudy skies made for pleasant playing conditions. It was South Euclid Ohio’s Roger Beckerman who took the early lead with a first round 25, putting him two strokes ahead of the field, and five ahead of Brown. But a sizzling 23 in round two enabled Brown to tie for the lead at 53, along with Jim Cruse of Baltimore, OH and Gene Reams of Whitehall, OH. None of the contenders could better Brown’s nine-under in round three. The top three finishers were Brown at 80 and Reams two back at 82, tied for second along with Randy Reeves of Montgomery, AL.

Anthony Amick, APA winner of the 2003 West Virginia Open

Roger Beckerman’s game picked back up in time for the match play, where he defeated Robb Titchell in the final match to claim his second GLT spot.

Anthony Amick Defends His APA Title

Defending APA champion Anthony Amick of Canal Winchester, OH won every GLT event played last year in Charleston. Amick continued his Charleston hot streak by defending his West Virginia Open title. Bonnie White of Concord, OH was the early leader at 25, with Amick three back and no on else under 30. Amick and White each put up 28’s in round two, and it was basically a two-player race at that point, with White holding a three-stroke lead going into the final round. Amick made his big move, firing a 26 to White’s 30—good enough for a narrow victory with a score of 82. Amick received his second GLT spot in the process.

Bonnie White got a bit of revenge in the APA match play, where she turned the tables and defeated Amick in the final match to earn her first GLT spot.
