25-26 October 2003 - Fredericksburg, VA
- The 2003 Virginia Clayton Cup team, led by co-captains Brad Lebo

place finishes in the previous two Cup appearances and won its fourth

fashions since North Carolina destroyed Virginia in 1997. Virginia won

Virginia took a 10-point lead over South Carolina
lead through the Saturday two-man events, finished
with a Cup record 113.5 points and walked away with a
16.5 point victory over a strong South Carolina team
that was led by captain Rick Baird and scored a total
of 97. The Great Lakes team, who was led by Kevin
Lacey and Bill Baus, finished in third at 85 points.
The defending champions North Carolina team came in a
disappointing fourth. The least experienced squad,
captained by Greg Newport and Opie Roberts, finished
at 64.5 points.
The South Carolina APA team won its first Hancock Cup team and is
the first tour other than North Carolina or Virginia to win the Cup.
The team that was led by Ricky D. Schults also dominated in the Sunday
matches, which included a second round 20 by Brian Hutchins, to win by
16.5 points over North Carolina.
South Carolina scored a total of 69.5 points, with the Russell
Sigmon, Jr. led North Carolina team second at 53. Defending champion
Virginia, led by Chris Kern, edged out Great Lakes, captained by
Anthony Amick, for third by 1/2 point. Virginia posted a final total
of 47, while Great Lakes scored a total of 46.5 points.
Several records were broken and/or shattered this weekend on Course
3. Hutchins' score of 20 in the second set of individual matches broke
the score of 21 that was initially set by Lebo and tied on a couple of
other occasions. Gilbert Sharpe shot an individual score of 19 in the
alternate hole match on Saturday, playing the even
numbered holes twice.
Rick Rybaczek and Billy Caudle set a better ball record by missing
just one hole within the 36-hole match. The North Carolina
representatives were successful on the first 21 they had played and
finished with a score of 37. Sharpe's mastery in the alternate stroke
match enabled him and Matt Summey to take the best alternate hole
score of 42 (21-21) into the record books. Lebo and Mike Brown
individually posted scores of 46 and 47 in the two-man combined score
match to post a total of 93 for a new two-man PPA record.
