Lee Messinger Wins Sixth Title of 2002 Season on PPA Texas Tour in a Playoff

24 August 2002 - Webster, TX - It took an extra 18 holes and went down to the end of the playoff, but Lee Messinger emerged a 6 time Texas Putting Tour winner in 2002 with a playoff win over non winner Byron Kirby of Lake Charles in 72-hole Texas State event on Saturday.

Both players were tied at the end of regulation at 118. Messenger was the third round leader at 85, Kirby was at 87 and Andy Gaiser of Houston, seeking his first pro victory, was three back at 88. The last round took it's toll on the players as the three leaders shot a combined 8 under the last round. Kirby, who had a second round 26 to tie for the low round of the tournament, led the way with a 31. Lee could only manage a 33, and Andy Gaiser had a bogey filled round of bad luck and shot 36. State spots in the pro division went to Byron Kirby, Randy Willett, and Jeffrey Smith

Gary Plain of Tyler won the APA division on Saturday with a 4 round total of 130. Gary shot a last round 28, best by 4 strokes, to overtake Doug Austin of Houston who was second at 132.

The heat index hovered around 115 and APA points leader Steve Tanton had to withdraw due to cramping. Al Simpson was in good spirits and completed the tournament despite the fact he clinically died and had to be revived just a few days earlier. Best wishes and good luck go out to AL.
