Opens 2002 Season With Victory in Lake
Charles, LA

Lake Charles, LA - The Texas Putting Tour opened the season in Lake
Charles, Louisiana for the second year. A
weather change prior to the start of the tournament signaled that this
year the normally easy playing #2 course would be much tougher. While no
rain fell, the wind went from 20 m.p.h.
from the south on Friday to a calm Saturday morning to 20
m.p.h.
from North by noon. Last year the average professional score for on
course 2 was 84, this year the average jumped to almost 94.
David Lynch started the tournament with a strong 9-under 27 to hold a
2 stroke lead over
Wade Sahmel who was competing in his first
professional event.
Lee Messinger put on a strong push in the second
round with the low round of the day at 11 under 25 to tie Wade for
second place. David was able to maintain his two stroke lead going into
the last round and finished strong with lowest last round to take the
first title of the year and a state spot with a 25 under 83. Wade Sahmel
took second with a 21 under 87 followed closely by Lee Messinger and
Jeffrey Smith with 20 under 88's. The other two state spots went to
Brice Bergesen and Jeffrey Smith.
In the amateur division
Mickey DeLucca
from Baton Rouge, LA in his first event as an amateur on the Texas
Putting Tour was able to win with consistent play at 16 under 92 that
netted him a spot in the state finals.
Steve Tanton was able to recover
enough from his recent accident to take second place. The other two
state spots went to Jack Ramsey and Greg Cole.
