Wade Sahmel Earns Second Professional Victory
11 May 2002 - Beaumont, TX - In what is becoming an all to familiar site a strong wind greeted the players for Saturday's event. The Beaumont course usually plays tough and almost always gets tougher as the day wears on, but the strong wind just made it that much more difficult. The day's difficulty really showed in the fact that no players were able to shoot 5-under or better in all three rounds.
Wade Sahmel put together a great first round and new course record of 10-under 26 to take a three stroke lead over Jeffrey Smith. The course took its revenge on Wade in the second round with a 2 under that enabled 3 other players, Al Simpson, Jeffrey Smith and Steve Armstrong to tie him going to the last round. With Al and Steve both falling out of contention on the front 9 the tournament came down to a contest between Jeff and Wade. Wade, playing just ahead of Jeff, put in a 5 under 31 score and waited to see if Jeff could catch him. With five holes to play Jeff needed two aces to tie and three to win, he was only able to manage one and lost by one stroke to Wade. With his second win of the year Wade captured his fourth and final state spot. Additional spots went to Steve Armstrong and Andy Gaiser.
In the amateur division Adam Sahmel captured his first state title of the year, and completed a Sahmel sweep for the day, by one stoke over Steve Tanton. Sate spots went to Jack Ramsey, Trevor Lewin and Mickey DeLucca.
