Robert Johnson Wins Second South Carolina Tour Event of the 2002 Season

Robert Johnson playing in the 2000 PPA National Championship (Fayetteville, NC)

1 June 2002 - Spartanburg, SC - Robert Johnson became the third player this season in South Carolina to win his second tournament on the tour, following Ray Guthrie and Greg Ward, after Johnson fired consistent rounds of 27, 26, 27, coupled with an untimely miscue by Guthrie on hole 14 in the final round.

Johnson needed to ace the last three holes to secure his first win since the 2002 season debut in Rock Hill. This came at the same time Guthrie aced the final three as well to only lose to Johnson by a single shot.

Ward was the guy to beat at the early going. A front nine 10 gave him a two-shot lead in the opening round over Michael Hitt. Ward was in at 24 and was poised to go for his third win in the last four South Carolina events. He would fall into a stumbling block in the last two rounds, firing rounds of 30 and 32 as temperatures continued to soar well into the 90's during the afternoon.

Johnson grabbed the second round lead by one shot over Guthrie and Dan Anders. Guthrie had the lead after a front nine 11 gave him a two-stroke lead, and was assuring himself of a Clayton Cup spot on the South Carolina team with his third win. With five holes left, Guthrie's ace putt on 14 (which breaks left to right down the fairway) lipped out left, went over to the right rail and caught the hill as it reached the rail and then the ball slid down the rail and rested behind the block. Guthrie would then settle for a bogey three and then missed hole 15 that would have set himself in a playoff against Johnson.

Instead, Johnson made the last three in play to secure his second win of the season and his first win in Spartanburg since his tour record-breaking score of 67 on Course 3 last season. Johnson finished the afternoon with a final score of 80, while Guthrie and Hitt finished tied for second at 81.

Tommy Hutchinson won for the fifth time in the APA Division on Saturday. After trailing by two strokes to Adam Smith in the second round, Hutchinson found a way to win, but not on his own valor. Hutchinson fired a final round 28, but Smith closed out with a final round 33 to knock himself out of the win. In the end, it was Hutchinson with a final score of 85.

Finishing second in the APA was Ricky D. Schults, who finished at 87. Third went to Smith, who tied Terry Hendrix at 88.

Gary English wound up alone in fourth with a score of 84. Dan Anders tied Darrell Britt and Tony Varnadore for fifth at 85. Greg Ward tied Rick Rybaczek and Jonathan Reid for eighth at 86 to round out the top ten on Course 2 in Spartanburg.

There were 15 money spots paid out in the Pro Division, and the score of 88 resulted in a six-way split for the final three spots. Hitt took his second World Match Play spot from this event, and Varnadore received the State Championship spot here.

The South Carolina tour returns to Spartanburg on Course 2 on Sunday, June 2, starting at 10:00am with Johnson the first player to tee off.
