Greg Newport Wins Port City Classic in a Playoff over Andy Coradini

Greg Newport, winner of the Port City Classic on the PPA North Carolina State Tour.

8 June 2002 - Wilmington, N.C. - The NC Tour returned to Wilmington for the first time since the 1999 Clayton Cup, and for the first time for a NC State event since the 1997 State Championship which was won by Todd Barfield. The weather was great, with temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's and plenty of shade on the course.

The first round saw Greg Newport open by making 6 of the first 7 holes en route to an opening round 25 and a two shot lead over Ray Guthrie. Newport could only fire a second round 30, which opened the door for Guthrie who would fire another 27 to take the second round lead at 54. Newport was in second at 55, Bob Haizlip at 57 in third and Andy Coradini in fourth at 58.

In the last round, Andy Coradini fired a final round 28 to enter the house at 86. Bob Haizlip, playing with Coradini, could only shoot a 30 and was at 87. Newport was five under after the 10th hole, but could not muster any more aces on the back nine and shot a 31 to put him tied with Coradini at 86. Guthrie also struggled the last round when he made the first three holes but took an untimely 6 on the fifth hole. He got back to three under and missed a chance at the playoff when his ace putt missed on hole 18.

In the playoff, Newport defeated Coradini 27-30. The win was Newport's third of the year and marked his 25th career NCPPA Tour victory. For his efforts, Newport earned $150.00. Coradini finished second and earned $110.00. Finishing tied for third were Bob Haizlip and Ray Guthrie who each earned $85.00 and in a tie for fifth were Gary Hester and Billy Caudle each earning $58.00.

In the APA Division, Lance Perdue shot consistent rounds of 31-32-32 to take a five shot victory over Bear Landin. The win marked Lance's first ever NC Tour APA win.

There were 14 Pros and 4 Amateurs in the event. Bob Haizlip earned his North Carolina State Medal Play spot as well as his NC Match Play spot. He also takes a commanding 7 shot lead into Goldsboro for the two-day National World spot over Rick Baird.
