Dan Anders Wins Barbara Nance Memorial With a Classic Opening of Last Round

25 May 2002 - High Point, N.C. - The elements involved for the sixth annual Barbara Nance Memorial in High Point featured hot and sticky conditions, with temperatures hovering in the mid to upper 80's throughout the day on Saturday. One featured that changed from the last time High Point had played on the schedule was that the carpet was played at a very much slower rate. Nonetheless, the scoring pace remained the same throughout day as 11 players broke 80 for the tournament.

Andy Coradini tried his best to win his first PPA event since winning the 2001 North Carolina State Championship in Lumberton last season. He was well on pace after taking the opening round lead at 24. As usual, scores were tightly packed as the cash line was three shots of the lead. Coradini continued his strong play with a second round 25 placed him at 49 for a one-shot lead on Dan Anders.

As Coradini maintained his putting stroke for his final round 25, Anders would go on a mission. He started the round acing the first ten, including a very difficult to ace 10th hole. Anders would jump out to make 12 of the first 13, but then sat quietly for the last five as he made only one of the last five (hole 17), but the ace there was enough to clip Coradini for his second North Carolina win this season.

In the end, Anders became the sixth winner of the Barbara Nance Memorial with a final score of 73, while Coradini settled for second at 74.

The Barbara Nance Memorial is in the memory of the mother of longtime APA player Chuck Nance. Barbara came out and, although never an official member of the PPA, supported Chuck during his tenure on the tour and also played several Novice events in her time. Chuck presented his annual dedication award this season to Billy Caudle. Although Caudle was a loss for words, he was described as a player who fully supported Putt-Putt for the last 15 years.

Coming from four down to win for the amateurs was Bear Landin, who posted a final round 25 to clip Lance Perdue by one shot after he was leading at 53 through 36 holes. Landin went on a torrid pace in the final round to win for the third time this season on the North Carolina program. Landin fired a final score of 82, while Perdue finished at 83. Russell Sigmon, Jr. and Adam Smith finished tied for third at 85.

Finishing tied for third in the Pro Division was Ray Guthrie and Opie Roberts, each playing strongly to a score of 77. Seven players rounded out the top five and top ten at 79. Those players include Vince Batten, Darrell Britt, Bob Haizlip, Michael Hitt, Peter Neumann, Rick Rybaczek, and Larry Simpson.

There were 36 pros and 14 APA's in this event, the highest turnout this season on the North Carolina tour, not including combined events. Eighteen money spots were paid out in the Pro Division, with the score of 83 receiving a two-way split of the last cash spot.

Guthrie took the World Match Play, North Carolina State and Match Play spots available in this event. The win for Anders makes him the fourth player from the state of Georgia to win the Barbara Nance Memorial, joining Lewis Burton, Greg Ward, and defending champion Gary English.

The North Carolina tour will resume its action on Sunday, May 26, at 10:00am on Course 1 in High Point for the 10th annual Wayne Hancock Memorial.
