Tony Varnadore Wins Charles Connor, Jr. Memorial Tournament
Tony Varnadore playing at the Orange Lake Resort & Country Club.23 June 2002 - Forest City, NC - Tony Varnadore won a wild shootout for first in the Pro Division on Sunday. Mired in a pack of 10 players within two shots of the lead, Varnadore fired a final round 25 to clip two-round co-leader Todd Fowler and local player Allen Wall by a single stroke in Forest City during play at the Charles Connor Memorial.
Varnadore won his second North Carolina event of his career and sixth in South Carolina with a final score of 77. Fowler and Wall finished tied for second at 78, while Andy Coradini, Greg Newport, and Greg Ward wound up tied for third at 80.
Russell Sigmon, Jr. grabbed his first career win in South Carolina and only his second ever APA win after he hung on to win by two shots over Ben Blake. Sigmon, leader at 52 after two rounds, posted a final round 29 to win with an 81. Blake fired a final round 25 to pull into second at 83, while Ricky D. Schults, who won on Saturday, finished in third at 84.
Billy Caudle earned his North Carolina State Spot and Tony Jackson earned his North Carolina Match Play Spot. Allen Wall and Todd Fowler both earned their South Carolina State Spots. Todd Fowler defeated Tony Varnadore in a playoff to take the PPA World Match Play spot. In the Amateur division, Ben Blake earned the two-day North Carolina APA State Spot.
South Carolina returns to action in two weeks, on July 6 & 7 on Course 2 in Rock Hill. North Carolina will resume play on July 20 & 21 in Wilson as they will combine with the Virginia tour.
