Shawn
Gilliland has no skills. He proved he is a putter that can win
big by sweeping both the Medal and Match Play portions of the
Southport Open on the Indiana Professional Putters Tour. Gilliland
smoked the tightly bunched field in his final 18 holes by shooting a
14 under par 22, one off the course record that was set in the
1970's. His 54 hole total 76 sets a new IPPT record for 54 holes set
earlier this year in Louisville by
Tim
Greenert. Gilliland aced every hole but number 12 on the tough
back nine to help him to the 7 stroke victory over
Charlie Greenwalt of Indianapolis. Six players tied for third at
85. They were Tim Greenert,
Tom Gross,
Jim
Garrison,
Jeff
Garrison, Jerry Pinotti and
Danny
Holcomb.
Gilliland continued his hot shooting in the Match Play event
winning four matches and picking up his second WPC spot in the
process. Gilliland defeated Jerry Pinotti of Jeffersonville, Indiana
in the 36 hole final 7 and 6. He advanced to the finals with wins
over Brian
Summers 2 and 1, Danny Holcomb 2 and 1, and Jim Garrison 2 up.
Pinotti advanced to the finals with wins over
Tom
Morrison 2 and 1, Tim Greenert third hole of sudden death and
John Ventura 4 and 3.
John
Ventura won the second WPC spot in a playoff with Jim Garrison 1
up 18th hole.
