Marcellino, winner
of the IPPT West Major (Columbus, IN). |
12 May 2002 -
Columbus, IN - Louisville Touring Pro
Bob
Marcellino literally "Walked on Water" to win his first event on
the Indiana Professional Putters Tour and possibly his first event
since winning the
1968 PPA Nationals in Louisville,
Kentucky. Marcellino had a one stroke lead over
Tom Gross
after 36 holes, when the rains came during play in the third round.
After 54 holes Marcellino led
Jeff
Garrison by 3 strokes and Tom Gross by 4. Following a 20 minute
Rain Delay, Play was started again only to have it rain steady
during round number 4. Marcellino kept it together with a 7 under 29
to open up a 5 stroke lead over Garrison. In round five the rains
came hard again suspending play and turning the already tough
scoring course into a putters nightmare.
Marcellino never faltered despite a 35 on the rain soaked carpets
in round 5 and finished with a 4 under par 32 to win the event by 3
strokes over Club Pro Paul May of Louisville. Jerry Pinotti of
Jeffersonville and Jim Payne of Louisville tied for 3rd with a score
of 185.

12 May 2002 -
Columbus, IN -
Nate Nichols
of Edinburgh fired a 25 under par 191 to win the "Rain Soaked" IPPT
West Major APA Title.
James Weber
of Cincinnati was second just one shot back at 192. 16-year-old
Zach Smith
of Indianapolis finished third with a 194. Nichols, Weber and Smith
were locked up in a tight battle after 2 rounds with Smith shooting
a 57, Weber a 60 and Nichols a 61. Then the rains came.
Nichols survived the wet 3rd round with a 4 under 32. Weber was
able to put together a 3 under 33 while Smith shot par on the back 9
for a 2 under par 34. None of the three leaders broke 31 in the
final three rounds as Nichols held on to pick up his second victory
in four tries this season.
