7 July 2002 - Mansfield, OH -
On a perfect July morning, two Pittsburgh players managed to tame
the fast carpets of Mansfield’s North course in the Mid-Ohio Open.
Craig
Williams fired rounds of 25-26-30 to shoot 81, and edge out
Ken Hastings
by a single shot. Williams and Hastings were tied after the first round
and Williams held a single shot advantage over Hastings entering the
final round of play. When both players started slowly the final round,
it enabled
Paul Pastilong of Maple Heights to catch up from four shots back. It
was Williams’ solid play on his closing holes that earned him the
victory and a World spot. Hastings’ second place finish earned him a GLT
spot. Pastilong finished third at 83.

Jeff Brown,
APA winner of the
Mid-Ohio Open.
|
Williams made it sweep in the match play by defeating
Jim Engel
of Canfield. Engel received the GLT spot.
Jeff Brown
of North Olmsted continued his dominance of the North course at
Mansfield in the APA division. Brown led wire to wire and posted a seven
stroke victory with a score of 89. Brown has won five consecutive GLT
events on this golf course. Leroy Lacey of Springfield was second at 96,
and Barb Mingo
of North Olmsted was third at 98.
James Weber
of Cincinnati defeated Anthony Burns of Springfield in the match play
finals. Burns earned both of his GLT spots in the Mid-Ohio Open.
