6 July 2002 - Mansfield, OH -
On a rare cool day in July,
Robin Ventura of Cincinnati heated up
the course and overcame a three-stroke deficit in the final round to
catch second round leader,
Scott Buddie of Westlake. Buddie’s pair of
26’s in the first two rounds placed him three shots ahead of Ventura and
Bill Baus of Cleveland Heights, and four shots ahead of
Kevin Lacey of
Cincinnati. Ventura’s 26 in the last round enabled her to draw even with
Buddie at a score of 81 at the completion of regulation play. Lacey also
posted a 26 the last round, but finished one shot behind the leaders.
Baus finished a shot behind Lacey in fourth place.

The significance of the 18-hole playoff between Ventura and Buddie
was augmented by the fact that both players were still seeking World
spots and GLT spots. In the end, it was Ventura who cashed in, earning
her first individual GLT title ever as a pro and both of the
qualification spots.
Kevin Lacey cruised through the match play bracket and defeated
Jim
Engel of Canfield in the finals. Engel received a GLT spot.
Leroy Lacey led the APA division after each round, but his finals
score of 85 only narrowly edged out fellow Springfield player Anthony
Burns at 86. James Weber of Cincinnati finished third at 87.
It was a good day for the ladies as Karen Hastings of Penn Hills, PA
defeated Bill Wahls of North Ridgeville in the match play finals. Leroy
Lacey picked up his second GLT spot by advancing to the semifinals.
