29 September 2001 - Richmond, VA - As the day continued and the
temperatures got a bit warmer, much higher scoring was the key factor in
the second half of the doubleheader in Richmond on Saturday. Earlier in
the day, 14 players broke 80. In the afternoon, scores were incredibly
higher. Manfred
Stewart won the second tournament of the day in Richmond by posting
a score of one shot better than his earlier outcome. Stewart would post
rounds of 27, 23, and 24 to edge out Dave
Taylor by two shots, despite a final round 23 by Taylor. Stewart
shot 75 earlier in the day and five players shot 74 or better. On this
blustery afternoon, Stewart was the only player who broke 75 as he won
his second tournament of the season, collecting the 2001
Virginia Open as well.
Jeff
Spainhour and Ken
Cook had the lead at 48 and was in command, but both players backed
up in the final round. Spainhour would fire a final round 30 to fall
four back of Stewart, while Cook's 31 barely kept him in the top 10 and
five shots in back of the winner. Stewart will head to the State
Championship on Sunday with a positive outlook, now that he has won on
Saturday. Taylor was gunning for his first win since the season opener,
but fell short by two and finished in second at 76.
Another playoff had to be decided in the APA Division. This time, Jonathan
Moore, who lost an earlier playoff in the day to Steven Jones,
recovered nicely to pick up his tour-leading fourth victory. Moore had a
one-shot lead on two other players, including Malcolm
Shumaker before Shumaker would catch him in the final round. Both
Moore and Shumaker headed into the second playoff of the day in Richmond
with a regulation score of 81.
Moore jumped ahead early in the playoff and held on to win by three
shots over Shumaker. The playoff score was 26-29 in favor of Moore.
Shumaker would finish second for the APA, and defending state champion
Wayne Saunders came in third at 82.
Robert
Johnson continued his strong play on Saturday and finished third for
the Pro Division at 78. Johnson tied Jeff Spainhour, Brad
Lebo, Gilbert
Sharpe, and Matt
Summey for the third position. There were 13 spots paid out in the
Pro Division as the score of 80 received a full share.
The Virginia tour will have its state championship on Sunday,
September 30, starting at 10:00am. The event will be in Richmond on
Course 3.
