Mike Brown Uses Second Round 21 to Win on VA Tour

3 June 2001 - Newport News, VA - In a 54-hole tournament, one excellent round is often enough to put a player in the money with two otherwise average rounds. It is rarer that one round will move a player into the winner's circle in a 54-hole event.

Mike Brown playing in the 2000 PPA National Championship in Fayetteville, N.C.

Trailing a group of five players by two strokes who shared the lead at 27 after the first round, Mike Brown fired an astounding round of 21 to move into a commanding four stroke lead entering the final round. Mike coasted to victory with a final round of 29 for a 54-hole total of 79, 29-under par, matching the winning score of the previous day's tournament won by Dave Taylor.

Finishing in a tie for second were local player Bo Luthie who used consistent rounds of 27, 27 and 29 to fire an 83 and Alan Quinnelly of Georgia who fired rounds of 32, 24 and 27 to also tie Luthie at 83. Brown's round of 21 would not be the only spectacularly low round of the day. Brad Lebo who entered the final round at 63, 13 strokes out of the lead and 4 stroke out of the last money spot, fired a final round of 22 that vaulted him into a tie for fourth place with Peter Neumann who also shot 85.

Liz Shumaker playing playing the 5th hole on course #3 in Richmond, VA.

In the amateur division, Liz Shumaker entered the final round with a slim one-stroke lead over Tyler Proffitt, the APA leader in points so far for 2001. Liz fired a final round of 28 which extended her narrow one stroke lead into a four stroke winning margin. In a tie for second place were Jonathan Moore and Paul Lowery who were tied at 90. Rounding out the top five in the amateur division were Bill Garrett and Chuck Cyr who tie for fourth at 92.

The Virginia State Tour is next in action on June 23rd and 24th in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Scores provided by Ed Grajewski.
