Dave Taylor Posts Second Win of 2001 on Virginia State Tour

2 June 2001 - Newport News, VA - Just one stroke out of the lead after the first round, Dave Taylor fired a second round 25 to move into the lead at 51, 21-under par by two strokes over Ken Cook, Matt Summey and Manfred Stewart who were tied for second at 53, 19-under par. First round leader Peter Neumann faltered in the second round shooting 30 to fall into a tie for fifth at 55 with Bo Luthie.

With the course drying out from rain that fell the previous evening and night and the wind that usually appears at the Newport News course in the early afternoon, the scores continued to go higher. The first round scoring average for the professional field was 28.32 rising to 29.59 in the second round and 29.77 in the third round.

Dave Taylor, playing in the first group, played a solid final round and posted a final round 28 to finish the 54-hole event at 79, 29-under par. Ken Cook who trailed Dave Taylor by two strokes entering the final round matched Dave Taylor's final round of 28 to post a 54-hole score of 81, 27-under par, and finish alone in second place. Mike Brown, who was at 57 entering the final round posted the best final round score of 26 surged into a tie for third with Peter Neumann who tied Brown at 83. In a three way tie for fifth were Bo Luthie, Gilbert Sharpe and Manfred Stewart who all shot 84.

In the amateur division, Steven Jones opened up a five stroke lead after 36-holes of play and then coasted to victory with a final round of 30 that saw his lead extended to six strokes. In a tie for second were Amy Smith and Jonathan Moore who each shot 92. Rounding out the top five in the amateur division were Tyler Proffitt and Bill Garrett who tied for fourth at 94.

The Virginia State Tour is next in action on Sunday, June 3rd, in Newport News, Virginia. Following this weekend of play, the Virginia State Tour returns to action on June 23rd and 24th in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
