Vince Batten Wins on Virginia
State Tour for Third Time in 2001
4 August 2001 - Lynchburg, VA - Vince
Batten continues to have himself a career year since his return to
the PPA ranks in 2000. After a eight-year layoff, Batten has wins in
the 2000
Virginia State Championship, and the 2001
Dogwood Festival Open and is destined to be one of the favorites
in the upcoming National Championship here in Lynchburg next week.
Batten got off to a good start toward the Nationals with a win on
Course 3 in Lynchburg by two strokes over Darrell
Anderson. First, Batten would have to erase a four-shot deficit in
the first round to opening round leader Greg
Ward. Ward led the 44-player field at 24, but soon realized Course
3 was not as easy as it turned out to be. Ward fired an even-par 36 to
slip out of the top 10. Batten would counteract with a second round 25
for the outright lead at 53 and a two-shot lead over Anderson.
Both Anderson and Batten would match themselves up for the final
round as they would both fired a final round 25. That would be enough
for Batten to claim his third win of the season. Batten would walk
away with a final score of 78, while Anderson closed out with an 80
for second. Daryl
Freeman finished in third at 82.
The APA Division found themselves in a playoff for first between Jonathan
Moore and a former National Champion in Jeff
Brown. Brown would be in early command as he fired a 26 to lead by
one over Virginia Open APA champion Jonathan Koo. Brown found danger
in the second round with a 32 to fall into third, but Tyler Proffitt
would find himself atop the leader board after a 27 gave him a
one-shot lead over Moore as Proffitt was in at 56, and Brown was two
back at 58.
Proffitt's final round was proven deadly for him as he, too, found
out Course 3 was not as easy as it seems. Proffitt managed a final
round 36 to close at 92, while Brown and Moore each ended the
afternoon tied at 88, with Brown winning the playoff for his first win
on the Virginia tour. Steven Jones and Wade Sahmel ended up tied for
third at 90, while Proffitt's 92 still had him finishing in the top
five.
Dave Taylor fired a final round 26 to finish fourth for the Pros at
83, while Mike Brown, Brad Lebo, and Randy Reeves rounded out the top
five at 84. Danny Dore and Greg Ward wound up tied for eighth at 85,
and a four-way tie for tenth at 86, that included Roger Beckerman,
Lewis Burton, David Lynch, and Rick Rybaczek.
The Virginia tour will conclude their weekend play on Sunday,
August 5, at 11:00am on Course 2. This will be the first time they
will play on that course since 1998, when Ward blistered the
competition in that event.
