Mike Brown Heads to 2001 PPA Southern With a Win in Fredericksburg
24 June 2001 - Fredericksburg, VA - Vince Batten appeared poised for a weekend sweep as he entered the final round on Sunday. Batten led the field of 22 professionals again with a 36-hole score of 52, 20-under par, just as he had the day before when he closed with a final round 24 for his victory. Mike Brown entered the final round five strokes off the lead at 57, clinging to the last money spot, but finished the 54-hole tournament tied for first place at 81 with Danny Dore who was playing in just his fourth tournament of 2001.

Mike Brown made up the five stroke margin on Batten with a final round 24 that left him tied with Danny Dore at 81, 27-under par, for first place. Dore had trailed by just one stroke entering the final round and had a final round 28. A group of four players finished tied for third at 82, one stroke out of the lead. In the tie for third were Vince Batten, Daryl Freeman, Brad Lebo and Buddy Taylor.
In the amateur division, Ken Schooler shook of a slow start opening the tournament with a 31 by closing with rounds of 24 and 28 to win the amateur division with a 54-hole total of 83, 25-under par. Steven Jones again finished alone in second, this time finishing with a three round score of 84 after rounds of 28, 29 and 27. Rounding out the top five in the amateur division were Bill Garrett in third place at 85, Wayne Saunders in fourth place at 87 and Amy Smith in fifth place at 89.
The Virginia State Tour is next in action on Saturday and Sunday, July 14th and July 15th, in Richmond, Virginia. The Virginia Open, defended by Bo Luthie, will be contested on Sunday, July 15th, on course 2 in Richmond, Virginia.
