Vince Batten Returns to Fredericksburg With a Victory

23 June 2001 - Fredericksburg, VA - Vince Batten returned to the course where he won the 2000 PPA Virginia State Championship and claimed his third state tour title of 2001 and second title of 2001 on the Virginia State Tour. Fresh of a win the week before in Asheboro, North Carolina on the North Carolina State Tour, Batten stormed out of the gate with an opening round 22 to tie for the first round lead with Bart Bason.

Both Batten and Bason stumbled in the second round as rain made the conditions more difficult for scoring. Batten followed up his 22 with a second round 30 while Bason followed up his 22 with a second round 31. Batten still held the lead after 36 holes of play at 52, 20-under par, but his second round 30 let a large number of players back into the tournament. Poised two strokes behind were Mike Brown and Peter Neumann at 54.

Just as quickly as Batten opened the door up for the field, he closed it again with a final round 24. Batten's three round total of 76, 32-under par, gave him a three stroke victory over Mike Brown who put together a final round 25 to move into second place at 79. In third place was Dave Taylor at 82 after a final round 26. Rounding out the top five were Peter Neumann and Daryl Freeman at 84.

In the amateur division, Steven Jones opened up a three stroke lead after 36 holes of play firing rounds of 29 and 26. Jones' final round of 30 opened the door for someone to take the tournament away from him. Jonathan Moore, three strokes back entering the final round, used a final round 25 to post a 54-hole total of 83 and take a two stroke victory. Jones finished alone in second at 85 with Chuck Cyr finishing alone in third at 87 following a final round 25. Rounding out the top five were Tyler Proffitt and Wayne Saunders who tied for fourth at 88.

The Virginia State Tour returns to action on Sunday, June 24th, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Virginia State Tour is next in action on Saturday and Sunday, July 14th and July 15th, in Richmond, Virginia.
