Mike Brown's Shoots Back-to-Back
26's to Win in Charlottesville on Virginia Tour
28 April 2001 - Charlottesville, VA - Trailing the leaders by 6 strokes
after the first round and just one stroke out of last place, Mike Brown
put on a 36-hole finishing charge to earn his first victory of 2001.
First round leaders, Danny Dore and
Peter
Neumann, who each fired
opening rounds of 27 faltered in the second round opening the tournament
up.
Matt Summey who won his first
professional tournament on this course last year put together rounds
of 30 and 27 to tie Darrell Anderson at 57 for the lead after 36 holes
of play. First round leader Danny Dore and Hall of Famer Buddy Taylor
were one stroke back at 58 entering the final round. Mike Brown had
returned to contention shooting a second round 26 to be tied with Daryl
Freeman at 59, two strokes off the lead with 18 holes to play.

Matt Summey, who was tied for the lead entering the final round, did
not back down from the challenge shooting a final round 29 for 54 hole
score of 86. The total score matched his winning score of a year ago on
this course. Unlike last year, it would not be good enough to secure
victory. Mike Brown fired his second consecutive round of 26 to post a
three round score of 85, 23-under par, and a one-stroke victory over
Summey. Darrell Anderson, tied for the lead entering the final round
finished at 88, tied with Daryl Freeman for third. In a three-way tie
for fifth were Brad
Lebo, Gilbert
Sharpe, and Rusty
Taylor.
In the amateur division, 54 holes were not enough to decide a winner.
Earl Davis, Bill
Garrett, and Russell Sigmon tied at 91, 17-under par,
went to an 18 hole playoff to decide the winner. With all the players
struggling after the front nine, Earl Davis put together a strong back
nine to pull away from Garrett and Sigmon to win the amateur division of
the Virginia State Tour event. Amy Smith finished alone in fourth at 93
and received the final expense reimbursement in the amateur field.
The Virginia State Tour is next in action on Sunday, April 29th,
again in Charlottesville, Virginia for the 2001 Dogwood Festival Open.
Out to defend his title is Rusty Taylor who won his first professional
event on this course last year. Following this weekend of play, the Virginia State Tour returns to action on
June 2nd in Fredericksburg, Virginia following the 2001 PPA National
Invitational being played in Burlington, North Carolina on May 19th and
20th.
