Rainey Statum Wins First Texas
State Tournament of 2001 in Duncanville
9 September 2001 - Duncanville, TX - New carpet greeted the players
at the Duncanville course and everyone was wondering how the course
would play. The older carpet had been making the course increasingly
difficult over the last few years with few players able to break 90. Don
Parker answered the question by blitzing the field in the first round
with a 10-under 25. There were also 5 other players who also managed to
get below 6 under mark. Don was not able to continue his great play and Rainey
Statum with first two rounds of 9 and 10 under held a 2 stroke lead
on Don and 3 strokes over Cliff
Matthews. Another 10-under 26 gave Rainey an easy 3 stroke win and a
State Spot with by far the lowest score seen in Duncanville in the last
5 years. Cliff Matthews took the other Texas State Spot.
In the amateur division Andy
Gaiser led wire to wire, only sharing the lead briefly after the 2nd
round with Wade
Sahmel, to make the race for player of the year a three way battle
between Andy Gaiser, Wade Sahmel, and Steve
Tanton. State Spots went to James
Kile, Dave
Blaylock, and Mike
Wellborn.
