Todd Barfield Wins South Carolina Tournament in Rock Hill to Open His 2001 Season
28 April 2001 - Rock Hill, S.C. - Former Rock Hill player Todd Barfield returned to action as he played his first PPA event of the 2001 season. The former South Carolina State Champion used a second round 23, capped by a ten on the back nine, to share the lead with three others at 52. Barfield's final round of 26 earned him his first win of the season on the South Carolina tour.

In the early going, it would be another local player, Jimmy Mott, taking the first round lead of 24, good enough to lead by one stroke over Jonathan Reid. Barfield would be five back of Mott after the first round, but would quickly respond on the back nine of the second round. Barfield missed one hole on the back (hole 12) to cap off a sensational round of 23 to go in the house tied for first with Mott, Tony Pack, and Vance Randall.
As the final round was winding down, four players walked in the clubhouse at 82, a group that included Mott, Greg Ward, Todd Fowler, and Frank Warren. Randall had four holes left to play and made them all to finish at 81 to take over the temporary lead at this point. By then, Barfield had six holes left and only needed to make two to win. By the time he got to hole 15, he was sitting atop the leader board and only made one of the last three to secure a two-shot victory over Randall. Barfield completed a perfect day with rounds of 29, 23, and 27 to wind up at 79. Randall ended up in second at 81.
Brian Hutchins cruised to an easy victory in the APA Division for the first time this year. Hutchins took the lead after the second round at 56, leading by three shots over Chris Hudson. Hutchins would extend the lead to a decisive margin of eight when he fired a final round 24 to end up at 80. The win for the 1999 State Champion is his first of the season. Jimmy Comer fired a final round 28 to edge out Hudson for second at 88. Hudson would end up third at 90. There were 15 players in the APA field on a beautiful but warm Saturday afternoon.
Barfield accepted the South Carolina State Qualifying spot from this event. Randall grabbed the South Carolina Match Play spot after his best finish since coming out of retirement last year. There were 13 money spots paid out in the Pro Division with the score of 88 being the cash line. Three spots were paid back out to the amateurs, with Hudson's 90 being the line there.
The two tours will compete again this Sunday, April 29, at 10:00am in Rock Hill as Barfield looks to make it two in a row on his home course.
