Mike Flavin Ties Two Course Records on Way to Win in Anderson

23 June 2001 - Anderson, S.C. - It took sharing two course records in Anderson for Mike Flavin to pick up his first victory since May 25, 1996 when he won in Charleston, South Carolina. Flavin tied both the single and three-round tournament records to capture his first win in over five years.

Flavin would get things started off on the right foot by opening play with a course tying record of 23 for a four shot lead over Randy Reeves. The score of 23 is also shared by Greg Ward, which set the record back in May 1999. Despite a second round 30, Flavin still led by four shots over Todd Fowler, who fired a second round 26 (second best score of the afternoon) after opening with a 31.

Flavin won the tournament in a wire-to-wire finish. He fired a final round 29 to end up with the day's best score of 82. The score matched Ward's finish back in 1999 and also tied Enid Klapper for the best score shot for 54 holes in Anderson when she did it in 1989.

Despite the history of high scoring in Anderson, five players broke 90, the first time that has ever happened. Also, Fowler's second place finish at 84 set a new record for the lowest score shot by a non-winner in Anderson. His score came with a pair of double bogey fours in the first round. Flavin's 53 also matched the 36-hole total set by Ward in 1999.

Brian Hutchins now leads the APA tour in victories with four after his second consecutive win in Anderson on Saturday afternoon. Again, the final round was the key factor. After a four-way tie for the lead at 29, which Hutchins was a part of, Hutchins was only down by two to Chris Hudson after a dismal 34 in the second round put him in a tie for third with points leader Tommy Hutchinson.

Hutchins started his comeback run again as he did earlier in the day with a final round 27 to vault to another winning finish by three shots over Keith Waters. Hutchins ended up ten shots better than in the morning when he wound up shooting 90. Waters finished in second at 93, while Hudson was third at 94. The win for Hutchins, coupled with an eight-place finish by Hutchinson during the afternoon, has now given the 1999 APA State Champion a 2 1/2 point lead on the current APA State Champion.

Rounding out the top five for the Pro Division in Anderson were three players finishing third at 88, including Jimmy Mott, Greg Newport and Randy Reeves. Once again, there were 13 money spots paid out in the Pro Division and three were given out in the APA Division. The Pro's cash line was at 95, one shot lower than earlier in the day; the APA's was at 94, seven better than earlier.

Flavin took both the State Qualifying and Match Play spots from this tournament, while Fowler took the 2-day spot. After 12 tournaments this season, Ward has a commanding 36-point lead on Fowler, whose finish moved him ahead of Robert Johnson for second. Ward also became the first player this season on the South Carolina tour program to amass $1,000.00 in winnings for 2001.

The South Carolina tour will continue their season in two weeks as they join forces with the North Carolina tour. They will start the weekend in Gastonia on Course 3, at 12:00pm on Saturday, July 7. After that, they will head over to Charlotte to play on Sunday, July 8, starting at 10:00am on Course 2.
