Tom Gross Wins Terre Haute Open
on Indiana State Tour

Tom Gross of Columbus, Indiana captured his first Indiana Tour
Medal Play Title winning the Terre Haute Open. Gross shot rounds of
28-29-29-27 for a 31 under par 113 on course 3. Long time PPA Pro
Jim Garrison of Mooresville, Indiana was second three shots back
with a 28 under par 116.
Charlie Greenwalt of Indianapolis finished third with a 27 under
par 117.
Gross jumped out of the gate early with a 28 and a 2 shot lead
over Charlie Greenwalt and Jeff Garrison. Jim Garrison used round 2
to put himself in contention shooting the days lowest round, a 10
under par 26, to tie Gross at the halfway mark with identical 57's.
Gross continues his consistent play with a 7 under par 29 in round
three that saw Greenwalt pull back to with in two strokes after
shooting a 9 under par 27. Gross shot his best round of the day, a 9
under par 27, in the final round to claim the three shot victory.
Jim Garrison finished with an 8 under par 28 to claim second place
while Charlie Greenwalt shot a 7 under par 29 to finish third. Jim
Bryant of Clayton, Indiana finished strong with a 9 under par 27 to
claim fourth place. The win is the first medal play title for Gross
since turning pro in August of 1998.
Featherstone Wins Terre Haute Open Match Play
12 May 2001 - Terre Haute, IN - Still smarting from his 7th place
finish in medal play on his home course,
Don Featherstone, of Terre Haute, refocused, reloaded and shot
down the match play field to capture his first Indiana Tour event.
On a course that features a rare water hole, Featherstone defeated
Jim Garrison 4 and 3 in round one, defeated
Jody Comer of Indianapolis in round two one up 1 hole of sudden
death, and then defeated
Jeff Garrison 6 and 5 in the 36 hole match play final. Jeff
Garrison advanced to the match play final by defeating Tom Gross 2
and 1 and Jim Bryant 1 up 18.
Don't Mess Around With Gulley In Terre Haute
Open
12 May 2001 - Terre Haute, IN - There are four things you DON'T
do in life. 1.Tug on Superman's cape, 2. spit into the wind, 3.pull
the mask off the Lone Ranger and 4. leave Chuck Gulley's name off
the list of amateur favorites when playing an Indiana tour event in
Terre Haute.
Gulley, from Terre Haute, fired rounds of 27-29-31-29 for a 28
under par 116, beating everyone in the PPA and APA field except pro
winner Tom Gross. Bill Hammons of Indianapolis finished second 2
shots back at 26 under par 118. Steve "The Duce Man" Moon, of
Edinburgh, scored his best finish of the year in third place with a
24 under par 120. The win is Gulley's first as an APA player and his
first ever tournament victory, including weekly locals at his home
course in Terre Haute.
Hammons Wins Terre Haute Open Match Play Title
12 May 2001 - Terre Haute, IN -
Bill Hammons of Indianapolis took home the Amateur Match Play
Title. Hammons putter was so hot he cut through the field with ease.
After a first round bye, Hammons defeated John Howard 1 up 19 in
sudden death. Then won his second match 4 and three and met Nate
Nichols of Edinburgh in the 36 hole finals where he captured the
title 4 and 3. Nichols advanced to the finals defeating Vicki Chinn
6 and 5, Dave Hagar 3 - 2 and Chuck Gulley 3 and 2.
