19 August 2001 - Southport, IN - Indianapolis Professional Touring Putter Charlie Greenwalt won the IPPT "Central Major" firing a 6 round total 167 (49 Under Par). Ohio Touring Pro John Ventura was second 6 shots back at 173, while Touring Pro Tom Gross finished third with a score of 175. Tom Gross took the first round lead shooting a 9 under par 27 on the wet carpets of course 3 at the Southport Putt-Putt. John Ventura was just one stroke behind with an 8 under par 28. Gross held his lead after 2 rounds with a score of 57, but Greenwalt moved to with in 2 strokes with an 8 under par 28. Gross and Greenwalt shared the 3rd round lead at 87 while the field was re paired for the final 3 rounds. That's when Greenwalt took charge. His 9 under 27 in the fourth round, an 11 under par 25 in the 5th round and an 8 under par 28 in the final round secured the victory. The win is Charlie's first medal play victory on the IPPT Tour this season. Zach Smith Wins Again With Amateur "Central Major" Title Shoots Career Best 48-Under Par 168 19 August 2001 - Southport, IN - 16-year-old Zach Smith fired a career best 48 under par 168 to win the IPPT Central Major by 6 shots. Smith, who calls Southport home, started slow but toured the Southport Putt-Putt course 3 in just 80 strokes in his last 3 rounds. John Watkins of Indianapolis and Nate Nichols of Edinburgh tied for second place at 42 under par 174, Watkins winning the points spot in a sudden death play-off. Smith put together rounds of 30-32-26-25-28 and 27 to pick up his second medal play victory of his career and the weekend. |
