Shawn Gilliland Survives, Wins Indianapolis Open

18 August 2001 - Indianapolis, IN - It's always nice to have a tournament on your home course unless your competition includes Touring Pro Charlie Greenwalt. Indianapolis Club Pro Shawn Gilliland used his knowledge to adjust to drying carpets and win the "Indianapolis Open", his second medal play title on the Indiana Tour this season. Greenwalt made his presence known in the first round shooting a 12 under par 24 to open play. Gilliland fired an 8 under par 28 to trail the leader by 4 strokes. Gilliland made up ground in round 2 shooting an 11 under par 25, to move to with in on of Greenwalt. Gilliland kept up the good play with a third round 26 to take a 3 stroke lead over Greenwalt who was in at 82. Gilliland's final round 31 was good enough to claim a one shot victory at 34 under par 110. Greenwalt was second at 111, while Ohio touring pro John Ventura finished third with a 72 hole total 119. John Ventura of Cincinnati, Ohio took home his first victory on the Indiana Tour winning the Indianapolis, Open Match Play Event. Ventura buried Jim Bryant of Clayton, Indiana 10 and 9 in the 36 hole final. Ventura advanced to the finals with wins over Darren Clayton 2 and 1 and Charlie Greenwalt 1 up 1st hole of sudden death. 18 August 2001 - Indianapolis, IN - The future of the PPA and the APA is in good hands. With young guns like Zach Smith of Southport in the game rest assure their will be great competition for years to come. Smith, who has taken his lumps at every tour event this season, was rewarded with a one stroke victory in the "Indianapolis Open." Smith shot 4 bogie free rounds of 33, 29, 28 and 30 for a 24 under par 120. Mike Moon of Columbus and long time amateur Bill Hammons of Indianapolis tied for second one shot back at 121. Moon winning the points position in a sudden death play-off. Danny Holcomb of Hope, Indiana won the Indianapolis Open Match Play event with a 2 and 1 victory over Bill Hammons. Holcomb advanced to the finals with wins over Nate Nichols 1 up 22 holes, and Zach Smith 1 up. Hammons advanced to the finals with wins over Scott McCutchen 4 and 3 and John Watkins 2 and 1. |
