Tom Gross Moves into Points Lead With Win at
South Major
22 July 2001 - Columbus, IN - PPA Touring Pro Tom Gross captured
his first Major Event on the Indiana Tour winning the "IPPT
South Major" by 5 shots over Dave Nutini of Columbus, Ohio.
Gross shot a 6 round total 177 (39 under par) to pick up his 3rd
victory of the year on the Indiana Tour and fourth victory overall
this season. With the win and a second place finish in the
"Columbus Open" Gross moved into the Indiana Tour Points
Lead. The start of the event was delayed about 40 minutes by a
thundershower that dumped over an inch of rain on Miller's
Putt-Putt. Gross, Nutini and Club Pro Jeff Garrison shared the first
round lead after all three players shot 6 under par 30's. Club Pro
Shawn Gilliland took the lead after round two shooting a 7 under par
29 and a 2 round total 60. Garrison became the third leader after
round three shooting a 7 under par 29 and a three round total 91, 3
shots ahead of Nutini and Jim Garrison. Dave Nutini moved back to
the top after shooting a 10 under par 26 and a four round total 120.
But Gross claimed the top spot in round five shooting the days
lowest round of 11 under par 25 and a 5 round total of 32 under par
148. Gross finished with a final round 29 to capture the South Major
Title. Dave Nutini bounced back with a 29 to place second, while
Touring Pro Mark Hasty of Fairborn Ohio shot 85 over the final 3
rounds to capture a podium finish in 3rd place. The Indiana Tour
will now take a break until Saturday August 18th when they play at
34th Street in Indianapolis.
Danny Holcomb Wins Again in Playoff for South
Major Title
Extends Points Lead in APA Battle
22 July 2001 - Columbus, IN - Amateur putter Danny Holcomb of
Hope, Indiana survived the rain, intense heat and pressure from a
strong amateur field to win the "IPPT Amateur South Major"
at Columbus. Holcomb fired an 8 under par 28 in the 18 hole play-off
with Nate Nichols of Edinburgh to win by 4 shots and take home his
5th Tour Victory. Holcomb started the day 2 shots out of the lead
held by Nichols and Vicki Chinn of Greenwood, both players opening
with 6 under par 30's. Nichols then moved into the lead by 3 shots
over Bill Hammons of Indianapolis after a 7 under par 29 in round
two. Nichols held the lead after three rounds with a 15 under par
93. Hammons grabbed the lead in round four with a 7 under par 29 and
a four round total 125. He held the lead after 5 rounds at 158 but
Holcomb fired a 7 under par 29 to move into second place just 3
shots behind. Nichols was another shot back at 162. Holcomb's final
round 6 under par 30 and Nichols final round 7 under par 29 gave
each a 6 round total 191 thus forcing the play-off.
