Jim Cruse Wins First Title of 2001, The Hoosier Classic in Richmond, IN
Jim Cruse, winner of the 2001 Hoosier Classic (Richmond, Indiana).
9 June 2001 - Richmond, IN - Jim Cruse claimed his first state title of 2001 winning the Hoosier Classic with a 54-hole score of 76, 32-under par. Jim defeated Indiana Club Pro Shawn Gilliland by one stroke.
Jim started out the tournament shooting a 25 and this was good enough for tie for 2nd place with Bill Thompson, but leading after the first round was Jim Bryant. Jim was representing the Indiana Tour. The hot putting continued for Jim in the second round has he was bale to cave out another 25, but this time his two round score of 51, 21-under was good enough for first place. In the last round Jim shot a score of 26 to finish the tournament at 32 under par. The tournament was played under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 80's.
There were 25 professional putters and 12 amateur putters who participated in the tournament. Tom Gross won the match play portion of the tournament as he defeated outstanding pro Rod Miller.
In the amateur division, Jeff Brown won the amateur division of the Hoosier Classic with a score of 81, 27-under. Robin Ventura finished second shooting a score of 83. In the match play event, Mike Bell defeated Jeff Brown in the finals and Scott Copeland in the semi-finals.
The next tournament to be played on the Great Lakes Tour will be the Indiana Open. It will be played in Richmond, IN on June 10.
