John Napoli Wins Gillooly Classic in a Playoff Over Paul Johns

18 August - Newark, OH - John Napoli won his first of the season in Newark. On Saturday, he tangled with Paul Johns for first on Course 1 in Newark after both competitors fired a three-round score of 82. Paul came from 4 shots down to force the playoff for first place.

Johns would get off to a good start after opening with a 25 to lead by 2 over Bill Thompson. After the second round, Napoli would hold the second round lead with a score of 50. Napoli second round total included an incredible score of 22, which tied the course record. Napoli would have a 4 shot lead going into the last round of the tournament.

Johns would finish the tournament with a final score of 28, which proved to be enough to force a playoff with Napoli. Both players finished the day with scores of 82 and that was good enough for one shot over Dave Nutini and 2 shots over Kevin Lacey and Bill Thompson. The two player head for an 18-hole playoff. Napoli jumped to an early two-stroke lead after acing the first three. Johns would tie it up after eight holes, but Napoli would retake the lead with an ace on the ninth hole. Napoli would shoot a 4-under front nine to Johns 3-under to lead by one. Both players kept it close as Napoli continued to lead by one through 14, but Napoli aced the 15th to take a two shot lead. Napoli and Johns aced the 16th and 18th holes in the playoff and Napoli defeated Johns by two to win the Gillooly Classic

In the match play finals Bill Thompson defeated Paul Johns

For the third time this season, Brandon Yee won the APA Division in the Gillooly Classic after he carded rounds of 28, 26, and 26 to win by three shots over Anthony Amick. Yee trailed by two shots to first round leader Jeff Brown before turning it on in the final two rounds. Yee would post a pair of 26's to win by three and win with the day's low score of 80. Anthony Amick was second at 83, while Jeff Brown finished in third at 84.

Daniel Mathias won the match play portion of the tournament by defeating James Weber.

There were 13 spots paid out in the tournament, as the score of 89 was split share among 4 players. Mike O'Rourke won the match play spot defeating Dave Nutini. Bill Thompson and Paul Johns had already secured their spots for the finals that is why there was a playoff for the match play spot between O'Rourke and Nutini.

The Great Lakes tour will return to action on Saturday, September 8, at 11:30 am on Course 2 for the Queens City Classic in Hamilton, OH.
