Bo Luthie and Amy Smith Capture First
Major Wins in 2000 Virginia Open
The change from course 3 to course 2 in Richmond, VA did little to slow down
to the scoring for the 2000 Virginia Open. In the 1999 Virginia Open, four
players shot under 100 for the four round event. Leading after two rounds was
Dave Taylor at 49, 23-under par, who fired a tournament low 22 in the second
round. Greg Newport was one stroke behind after two rounds at 50 with
Bo
Luthie two strokes behind at 51.
Luthie's third round of 24, 12-under par, was enough to tie him with Dave
Taylor at 75 for the lead after three rounds. Darrell Anderson
and Danny Dore were
just two strokes behind at 77. Playing in the first group, Dave Taylor posted
a final round of 31 leaving
the door wide open for Luthie to capture his first state major. Luthie did not
disappoint as he fired his second consecutive round of 24 to post a four round
score of 99, 45-under par, and three stroke victory over Greg Newport. Newport
fired the best final round, a 13-under par round of 23, of the 2000 Virginia
Open to move into second place at 102. Rounding out the top five were Darrell
Anderson at 105, Dave Taylor at 106, and Ed Grajewski and
Vince Batten tied at
107.
In the amateur division of the 2000 Virginia Open, Amy Smith fired a final
round of 26 to catch third round leader Wesley Pollard and post a one stroke
victory. Smith's score of 108, 36-under par, bettered both Wesley Pollard and
Steven Jones by one stroke. Rounding out the top five were Chuck Cyr who lead
after the first two rounds and Matt Coghill who tied at 110, 34-under par.
The next event on the Virginia schedule will be August 12 and 13 in
Fredericksburg, VA.
