Brad Lebo Wins in Playoff in Richmond
on the Virginia State Tour
8
July 2000 - Brad
Lebo opened the three round Virginia State Tour event with rounds of 23
and 23 to open up a four stroke lead on his nearest competitor with one
round to go. Gary Hinshaw, who entered the final round in second at 50,
22-under par, could do no better than 30 for his final round and ended up in
third place. Manfred
Stewart who trailed the leader Lebo by six strokes entering the final
round posted a final round of 24 for a three round total of 76, 32-under
par. Lebo, after posting tournament best rounds of 23 in each of his first
two rounds, could only post a final round of 30 to tie Stewart after the
regulation 54-holes.
The playoff saw Lebo open up a commanding four stroke lead after the
first hole when Stewart mistakenly picked up his ball on the first hole of
the 18-hole playoff assuming that the playoff was match-play and not
medal-play. Stewart was assessed a one stroke penalty and hit four from the
tee mat on his way to a five on the first hole. Stewart was unable to mount
any considerable challenge to Lebo in the 18-hole playoff after this blunder
on the first hole.
Five professionals, Rick
Baird, Vince Batten, Ed Grajewski, Robert
Johnson, and Wayne Cheatham, tied for fourth in the event at 81,
27-under par. Scott Searcy, Danny
Dore, and Thomas
Rawles tied at 82 for ninth place and the last full shares of prize
money.
Local amateur Steven Jones opened the tournament with a first round 24,
12-under par, and lead the rest of the way. Jones score of 79, 29-under par,
was good enough for a one-stroke victory over Amy Smith who posted a total
of 80 for the three rounds. Rounding out the top four in the amateur
division were Wesley Pollard at 81 and
Jonathan Moore at 82.
The next event on the Virginia schedule will be August 12 and 13 in
Fredericksburg, VA. The North and South Carolina tours will be in action on
July 15 in Forest City, NC and on July 16 in Gastonia, NC.
