Richmond, VA by Three Strokes
26
March 2000 - Gilbert
Sharpe opened the first round with a 24 and trailed by one shot to Darrell
Anderson. The local from Richmond then shot 25 in the second round to take the
lead at 49, in the house by one shot over Brad
Lebo, who carded a 23 in the second round that included a 10 on the back. Sharpe
then fired a final round of 26 to win his first Virginia event for the this season by three strokes over Anderson. The score of 75 tied the
lowest score shot on any tour this season, set by Mike
Brown, who did it in Durham
just one week ago in the North Carolina opening event. Anderson shot 78 to finish second
in the pros. A three-way tie for third
included Mike Brown, Brad Lebo, and Ken Cook to finish at 79, rounding out the top five.
Two
Richmond players appeared in the playoff in the APA division.
Malcolm Shumaker, who was the co-leader at 51 with Jonathan Moore after two
rounds of play, shot a 28
to finish at 79. Coming from out of the pack was Mike Grant who fired a final round 24 to erase a
four-shot deficit and force the playoff. In the playoff, Shumaker dominated
after Grant got into some early trouble with a five on hole 2 and a
bogey on hole 7. Shumaker, the 1999 Virginia APA
State Champion, was five up after the front nine and cruised to his first win of the season.
The APA rounded out its top five with Jonathan Moore at 80,
and Bob Allen and Steven Jones finishing four strokes back at 83.
There were 22 pros and 19 amateurs in this tournament with 81 splitting
last cash in the professional division and 83 getting last cash
again for the APA.
The next event on the Virginia schedule will be in two weeks when they join
the North Carolina tour in Durham on Saturday, April 8 at 12:00pm, and on
Sunday, April 9, in Roxboro at 10:00am.
