Rybaczek Puts on Cruise Control for His Second Victory
18 June 2000 - Lynchburg, VA - What a difference 24 hours can make. On Saturday, Rick Rybaczek was mired a tie for 27th
after finishing the tournament. On Sunday, he began the tournament opening with a 28
making him tied for fifth. The second round was the key in the event as he shot the lowest
round of the tournament of 25 to take a three-shot lead over three other players and never
faltered in winning his second tournament of the season and career in Lynchburg.
Rybaczek ran off strings of five in a row on two separate
occasions, including on the front nine of the second round when he shot 11 on the front by
making the last five of the front. Weather elements remained the same with oppressive
humidity being the key for higher scoring, despite low scores for the first round.
The same scenario was in place for the APA Division, as Matt
Coghill, who finished tied for 16th out of 18 players on Saturday, emerged victorious for
the first time in his shortened APA career. After taking the lead in the first round of
26, he fell backwards to be in a tie at 59 with Jimmy Comer. Coghill then put forth a
final round 29 that was good enough to grab his first win this year with a score of 88.
Comer tied Steven Jones for second at 90.
Robert Johnson once again wound up in a three-way tie for second at 85, this time with
Greg Newport and Rick Baird, who made the last six to get there. Newport shared the first
round lead of 26 with Ed Grajewski. Rounding out the top five in the Pro Division were
Andy Coradini, Bill Kirby, and Dave Taylor, all in at 86. Fifteen spots were paid out in
this event with the score 91 placing for a three-way split for the final available spots.
Coradini took the NCPPA Championship spot to be played in Greensboro in September. Randal
Smith took the NCPPA Match Play spot to be played in Forest City. Walter Kolb grabbed the
two-day APA spot.
Special thanks were given out to Joe and Terry Aboid for their welcome to the PPA once
again coming to Lynchburg, VA.
The next tournament for North Carolina will be this coming weekend in Spartanburg,
South Carolina as they will compete with the South Carolina tour on Course 2. The
tournament on Saturday will start at 12:00pm, followed by Sunday's tournament starting at
10:00am. Virginia will take time off for the next couple of weeks and will play again in
Richmond on July 8 & 9, with the tournament on Sunday being the 2000 Virginia Open.
These tournaments will be played on Course 2.
