Mike Brown Post One-Stroke Victory in Fredericksburg,
VA
9 September 2000 - Fredericksburg, VA - Opening rounds of 24 and
24 put Mike Brown ahead by two-strokes
entering the final round. Holding a two-stroke lead over Bill Kirby, 1995 National Champion, Mike
Brown, 1996 National Champion, fired a final round of 27 to post a narrow one-stroke
victory over Kirby and Danny Dore.
Brown's three round total of 75, 33-under par, was good for the $200 first place prize
money and his third win of the year on the Virginia Tour. In a tie for second were Kirby and Dore at 76, 32-under par, with Wayne Cheatham,
Ken Cook, and Ed Grajewski in a three-way tie for fourth. Rounding out the top ten were Andy Coradini at 78 in seventh, Rick Baird at 79 in eighth, Vince Batten at
81 in ninth, and Brad Lebo at 82 in tenth.
In the amateur division, Billy Caudle surged to a two-stroke lead after two rounds
opening with 25 and 25. Trailing by two entering the final round was Wesley Pollard who
opened the event with rounds of 24 and 28. The final round saw Billy Caudle cool off with
a final round of 30 for a three round total of 80, 28-under par, good for a one-stroke
victory over Wesley Pollard and David Sharp who tied for second at 81. Rounding out the
top five in the amateur division were Malcolm Shumaker at 83 in fourth and Marty Handschuh
at 85 in fifth.
The Virginia State Tour returns to action on Sunday, September 10th,
at 10 a.m. for the
2000 Virginia State Championship. A field of 30 professional putters is expected for this
six-round championship. Randal Smith will be out to defend his professional title with
Malcolm Shumaker out to defend his amateur state title.
