Greg Newport Avenges Playoff Lost to Win on Sunday in
Fredericksburg, VA
13 August 2000 - Fredericksburg, VA - Greg Newport avenged an earlier playoff
lost to Danny Dore on Saturday by winning Sunday in
Fredericksburg. Newport started the event with an opening round 22 to lead by four shots
over Dore, and was backed up with a 30 but still led by two before cruising to his second
win in Virginia this season.
After losing to Dore in the playoff on Saturday, Newport wound up being the only player
to break the score of 80 for the weekend as he fired a final round 27 to win by two shots
over Rusty Taylor at 79. Newport won
his only other tournament this season also breaking 80, with a playoff win in Durham.
Taylor shot a final round 25 to finish at 81 for second.
Jonathan Moore won for the first time this season with the final
two rounds of 25 and 24 to win by four shots over newly crowned APA National Champion
Wesley Pollard. Moore trailed by four shots to reigning state champion, Malcolm Shumaker
before making a stellar charge. Moore ended up with a final tally of 80 in his win, while
Pollard finished at 84, which included a final round 23. Steven Jones, who had the two
round lead, finished third at 85.
Ken Cook and Ed Grajewski finished in third at 82 in the Pro Division on Sunday, while
Sunday's winner Dore shot 83 to finish fifth. Ten spots again were paid out in the
tournament with a score of 86 getting a four-way split for the final two spots. Five spots
were paid out in the APA Division.
The Virginia tour will resume play in two weeks in Richmond. The first tournament will
be the Virginia Pro/Am and Teams Championship on Saturday, August 26 starting at 12:00pm
on Course 3. On Sunday, August 27, the third of their four majors will take place with the
Virginia Putting Classic starting at 10:00am.
