10 September 2000 - Fredericksburg, VA - Rounds of 22-27-25-25-27-25 for a six-round
total of 151, 65-under par, gave Vince Batten a one-stroke victory over
Andy
Coradini.
Vince Batten, returning to the game after an extended layoff, opened the tournament making
10 of his first 11 holes on his way to an opening round of 22 and a three-stroke lead
after 18-holes. After failing into second place after the second round, Batten once again
surged into the lead with a third round 25 to take the lead at 74 after thee rounds. In a
tie for second entering the final three round were Danny Dore and Andy Coradini at 77,
three strokes behind Batten.
The final 54-holes saw these three players vie for the Virginia State Title with Batten
holding narrow two and one strokes leads after 72 and 90 holes, respectively. The final
round saw Andy Coradini take the lead after the front nine firing a 10, 8-under par, on
the front to lead Batten by one stroke. Batten responded with a back nine of 13 to
Coradini's 15 to post his six round score of 151 bettering Coradini by one stroke.
Batten's win earned him $800 with runner-up Andy Coradini earning $600 and third place
finisher, Danny Dore, pocketing $475.
Wayne Saunders captured the Amateur Virginia State Championship with a six round score
of 166, 50-under par, to narrowly defeat David Sharp and Jonathan Moore who finished in a
tie for second at 167. Finishing in a tie for fourth were Marty Handschuh and
Billy Caudle
at 168.
