Rusty Taylor Gets First Pro Win at
Dogwood Festival Open

June 2000 - Charlottesville, VA - With the scores tightly grouped together,
it should have come as no surprise that it took a playoff to decide the
winner of the 2000 Dogwood Festival Open. Last years 1999 Dogwood Festival
Open required five holes of sudden-death after an 18-hole playoff to decide
the winner. The 2000 tournament required nearly as much play as Rusty Taylor
and Darrell Anderson tied after 72 holes were still tied after an additional
18 holes. With honors on the first sudden death hole, Rusty Taylor aced the
hole putting the pressure on Darrell Anderson who missed the hole giving
Rusty his first professional win.
The Dogwood Festival Open, which replaced the Maryland Open on the
schedule in 1999, is the first major of the year on the Virginia Tour. Other
players contending entering the final round were Bart Bason who was tied for
the lead at 87, 21-under par, with eventual runner-up Darrell Anderson. In a
three-way tie for third entering the final round were Dave
Taylor, Ken
Cook,
and Rusty
Taylor.
In the amateur division, Wesley Pollard posted a three-shot win over
Marty Handschuh who finished alone in second. Pollard score of 119, 25-under
par, was one stroke behind last year's winning amateur score by Matt Summey
who fired a 118 in 1999 at this event to win by 11 strokes.
The Virginia Tour next plays on Saturday and Sunday, June 17th and June
18th, in Lynchburg, VA. These events are co-sponsored with the North
Carolina State Tour.
