Greg Ward Wins in Playoff Over Barfield and Coradini
4 June 2000 - Spartanburg, SC - For the second straight South Carolina weekend,
temperatures on Sunday were almost 20 degrees cooler from Saturday, and overcast
conditions were the key elements in lower scoring from Saturday.
Greg Ward pulled out the
tour's leading 40th victory of his career after firing a final round of 24 and watched on
as Todd Barfield and Andy Coradini each carded a 76 to tie
Ward. Coradini shot 23 in the final round to force the tie, and Barfield had a chance to
win outright when his ball on 18 broke and missed just left at the last second to force
the playoff.
All three players got off to very respectable starts through the first five holes.
Coradini took himself out with a bogey on hole 6 and had problems clawing back as Ward and
Barfield were topping putts one after the other. After Ward led by one after nine over
Barfield, he broke it open when Barfield missed some good holes down the stretch, and
before it was over, Ward extended the margin to four shots after 17 and won by three for
his first win of the season.
Redemption was out there for Keith Waters, as on
Saturday he lost by eight shots to eventual winner Jonathan Reid. This time, Waters
captured the moment in the APA Division as he fired a 26 in the first round, and a 27 in
the second, to run in a wire-to-wire victory. Waters closed the event with a score of 84,
while Reid and Chris Hudson each tied for second at 86.
After Barfield and Coradini ended up tied for second, Gary English, Todd Fowler, and
Tony Varnadore each finished tied for fourth at 78. The score of 23 was the low round of
the tournament committed by Coradini, Varnadore, and Tony Pack. Thirteen spots were paid
out in this event with a score 82 placing for the last available spot.
Barfield defeated Coradini in the playoff by three shots to take the qualifying spot
for the South Carolina PPA State to be played on Course 2 in Spartanburg later this year.
Varnadore took the Match Play spot to be played in Anderson in August. Opie Roberts edged
out Rick Baird by one shot over the weekend to accept the South Carolina two-day spot.
Greg Newport retakes the points lead by one point over Fowler when the weekend came to a
close.
South Carolina resumes play next weekend, June 10 & 11, in Rock Hill on Course 2.
Sunday's tournament will be the Palmetto Classic, four rounds with a tee-time starting at
9:00am. Saturday's event will start at 12:00pm.
