Greg Newport Wins in Spartanburg, SC

3 June 2000 - Spartanburg, SC - The tournament in Spartanburg on Saturday greeted many people to new carpeting and temperatures into the 90's at the start of the event. The carpeting for the event also players with much lower scoring than in the past where upper 80's usually won the tournament on Course 1.

Greg Newport opened the tournament having the first round lead at 25 and led by one shot over four players. He found himself trailing by four shots to Darrell Britt when Britt shot a 23, course record, in the second round to take a three shot lead over Rick Baird. Newport found himself back into the lead when Britt took a five on the fifth hole, and Newport calmly walked into the clubhouse with a score of 80 (-28) to win by one over Britt.

For the reigning South Carolina Player of the Year, it was his second win of the season in South Carolina, the other being the morning event in Anderson back in April. Newport also reached a milestone when he aced the first hole to officially make the 700,000th stroke recorded in South Carolina history.

Jonathan Reid found himself in the win column for the first time this season with a pair of 27's in the last two rounds for an easy three-shot win over fellow local player Tommy Hutchinson. After being in third after the first round, Reid carded front nines of 12 and 11 in the final two rounds to capture his first win and retains his lead in the points race in the APA race. Hutchinson finished second at 87. Keith Waters took third with a score of 92.

Opie Roberts continued his hot streak within the competition by finishing in a tie for third with Gary English and Greg Ward at 82. The low round went to Britt and Robert Johnson with 23, new course record on Course 1. Fifteen spots were paid out in this event with a score 87 placing for the last available spot.

English took the qualifying spots in this event for the South Carolina PPA State to be played on Course 2 in Spartanburg later this year, and the Match Play spot to be played in Anderson in August. He received those after he defeated Roberts in a playoff for those spots.

The next South Carolina tournament will be Sunday, June 4, at 10:00am on Course 1 in Spartanburg. After that, they will head back to Rock Hill the following weekend on Course 2 for the upcoming Palmetto Classic on Sunday, June 11. The major is South Carolina's second of the season.
