Burton Wins on Red Course in Augusta, GA
13 August 2000 - Augusta, GA - Two-time National Champion Lewis Burton won for the first time on the South Carolina tour, winning with the same score that won Saturday on the Red Course in Augusta, 76. Burton popped three consistent rounds of 25, 25, and 26 to win by one shot over Edgar Hollifield on a picture-perfect day in Augusta.
Hollifield fired a tournament low 23 to take the outright lead at 49 with 18 holes to play. Hollifield couldn't contain it as his lead was only one to start the final round. He shot 28 and coupled with Burton's 26 sealed the win for Burton for the first time since winning on Spartanburg #2 on June 26 of last year. Three players broke 80 for the tournament, as Burton's 76 and Hollifield's 77 finished one-two in the 23-player field. Frank Warren shot 78 to finish third.
The streak finally came to an end for Chris Hudson, who was going for an incredible seventh straight South Carolina win in the APA Division. As a matter of fact, Hudson failed to finish in the top four in South Carolina since Rock Hill back in May. Billy Caudle, instead, came out on top winning with a final score of 82, to win by four shots over Todd Trent. Stan Seethoff and Jonathan Reid each finished in third at 88.
Rounding out the top five in the Pro Division on Sunday were current points leader Todd Fowler, along with Michael Hitt, and Greg Ward, all finishing at 83. There were 12 money spots available with the cash line sitting at 86. The South Carolina Qualifying and Match Play spots went to Hollifield with his outstanding finish. Local player and 1991 South Carolina State Champion Bobby Ward, back after a three-year layoff, received the two-day qualifying spot.
South Carolina will play again on Course 2 in Anderson on Saturday, August 26, for a doubleheader starting at 10:00am. Then, they will have their third annual Match Play Championship on Sunday, August 27, starting at 10:00am in Anderson.
