Britt Wins in Augusta, GA for Second Win of 2000

12 August 2000 - Augusta, GA - Darrell Britt was in command all afternoon on Saturday in Augusta. Starting the tournament out with a pair of 24's was more than enough as he won his second event of the South Carolina tour season with a marginal four shot win over fellow Atlanta players Lewis Burton and Greg Ward. After his second 24 of the tournament, Britt sensed victory when he had a five-shot lead on Ward, winner of the last three times played on the Augusta course. Britt cruised to his win after a final round 28 cushioned the final tally at 76. Burton and Ward each finished second at 80. The tournament was introduced to seasonal and low humid conditions, the key elements in low scoring on this mid-August afternoon.

Chris Hudson, in order to pick up his sixth win, had to come from way behind in the final round. Hudson did one the most accomplishments in not only South Carolina but nationwide history as he fired a perfect nine on the back in the final round, to come from five down with nine to play and won. Hudson made the very difficult-to-make uniquely formatted hole 18 to win by three shots over Jonathan Reid, who has played bridesmaid to Hudson the last five tournaments. Hudson ended Saturday's play with a score of 90, while Reid shot 93 for second. Billy Caudle, who had the two-round lead before the comeback by Hudson, finished third at 95.

Only 23 players took part in the first of two events played in Augusta this weekend. Michael Hitt and Randy Reeves each squandered to a tie for fourth with a final score of 82. Reeves shot a final round 23 as the lowest round of the day. There were just 11 money spots available with the cash line sitting at 87. The South Carolina Qualifying and Match Play spots went to local player and former National tournament director Mark Ross. South Carolina will play again on the Red Course in Augusta on Sunday, August 13, starting at 10:00am.
