Randy Reeves Wins South Carolina
Match-Play Championship
27 August 2000 - Anderson, SC - After drawing a first-round bye to start
the third annual South Carolina Match-Play, Randy Reeves found himself in the
second round in one of his toughest matches of the day, facing Greg Ward.
After defeating Ward in rather fashion, the tough road continued as he faced
off against Tony Jackson, then Gary Hester, and finally Mike Flavin, winning
all three of those matches before taking a break to see who would emerge out
of the loser's bracket.
That
player would be Darrell Britt, who was the last winner of the annual event.
Britt also received a first-round bye before knocking off Jay Klapper, then
losing to Hester. Britt went through Edgar Hollifield, Todd Barfield, Allen
Wall, and Lewis Burton before facing Flavin in the finals for the right to
face Reeves.
In
the 36-hole championship round, Reeves started off hot, going 2-up after the
first 18 holes and extended to as many as four through 22 holes. Britt started
a comeback only to go one-down with nine to play. But Reeves capitalized with
aces on 14, 15, and 16 (the finishing hole) to win three-up over the defending
champion. The win earned Reeves $275 while Britt took home $150 for second.
Billy Caudle ran a much tougher road in his quest for his
second straight Match Play APA title. Caudle started out against Jonathan
Reid, then faced Keith Waters, Adam Smith, and Chris Hudson, before facing
Jimmy Comer in the championship. Comer was defeated by Smith in the second
round of the winner's bracket. Then, he had to knock off Waters, Todd Trent,
Smith again, and Hudson to face off Caudle for the title. Caudle emerged
victorious with a 2 & 1 victory over Comer.
The South Carolina tour will conclude its regular season on Saturday,
September 30 in Spartanburg, then they will play its State Championship on Course
2 on Sunday, October 1.
